original antique vintage joe mabel darpel texas navy sailor tattoo flash ~5x7
flash cut, roughly 5x7 inches, hand painted by joe and/or mabel darpel, probably 1940s.
on textured thick artist type cardstock paper. remnants of board and glue on back side.
Joe Darpel, 1901-1968, was a lifelong carnival/circus sideshow manager, tattooed and tattooed man. He had a body suit of beautiful tattoos that were put on by Bert Grimm or William Grimshaw or both (and probably others) sometime in the late 1910s.
Around that same time he began tattooing on sideshows and carnivals. It was at one of William Kennedy's sideshows where Joe met Mabel Kennedy (William's daughter) where Joe was sideshow manager. Mabel was quite an accomplished sideshow performer as psychic, knife thrower and horse rider and later an accomplished tattooer herself.
Later they were married in a carnival and they became tattooing partners, traveling with sideshows and operating tattoo shops in Virginia, Kansas and finally in Texas for many years. Joe and Mabel both painted beautiful tattoo flash that is very rare, loved and sought after by serious collectors.
